What’s Happening on the Oregon Coast?

This week, Newport and surrounding areas are facing a combination of a bomb cyclone and King Tides. Winds are reaching up to 70 mph, and coastal flooding is a significant concern as waves surge higher than usual. The combination of these weather phenomena increases risks like flying debris, dangerous surf, and unexpected sneaker waves

Tips to Keep Pets Safe During Severe Coastal Weather

1. Stay Informed

  • Stay informed by regularly checking weather updates and warnings for the Oregon Coast. Early information allows you to act swiftly and effectively.
  • Keep pets inside during high winds. Flying debris and storm surges can make outdoor spaces dangerous.
  • Take your pets for a bathroom break before the storm intensifies. This reduces the need to take them out during the worst of the weather, which can be both dangerous and stressful for both of you. Always supervise your pets closely when they are outside to prevent them from getting spooked and running off.

2. Prepare an Emergency Kit

  • Start by gathering essential items like pet food, water, medications, leashes, and a first-aid kit in one easy-to-access spot. Including copies of your pet’s medical records and a recent photo can be invaluable if they become lost during the storm.
  • Verify that the contact information associated with your pet’s microchip is up-to-date. Also, keep their collars with ID tags on at all times to improve the chances of a quick reunion if they get separated from you.

3. Secure Outdoor Items

  • If pets have access to outdoor spaces, remove loose objects like toys or furniture that could become projectiles.
  • Ensure that fences and gates are secure, and bring any outdoor pets inside well before the storm hits.
  • After the storm has passed, do a thorough inspection of your outdoor area. Look for hazards such as downed power lines, sharp debris, or unstable ground. Remove any dangerous objects before allowing your pets back outside to roam.

4. Monitor Beaches and Parks

  • Avoid walking pets near the ocean during King Tides or storms. Sneaker waves and floating debris can appear suddenly, posing significant risks.

5. Watch for Behavioral Changes

  • Storms can be especially frightening for pets, triggering significant anxiety. To help alleviate their stress, consider using calming products like anxiety vests, which apply gentle pressure to help reduce tension. Additionally, soothing sprays and diffusers that release calming pheromones can create a more relaxed atmosphere for your pets.
  • Playing soft, relaxing music can serve as a distraction from the loud sounds of thunder and wind. Music can help to mask these noises and lower anxiety levels, making your pets feel more at ease.
  • For pets that tend to hide when they’re anxious, make sure they have access to safe hiding spots within the designated room. Allowing them to retreat to a space where they feel secure can be very comforting.

6. Evacuation Plan

  • Have a plan for evacuation that considers your pets. Know the pet-friendly shelters or hotels in your area, and make sure you have carriers or crates for each pet to ensure their safety and comfort during the move.
  • Practice getting your pets into these carriers ahead of time so they are familiar with them.
